Simon Griffett is now the only remaining engineer still supporting these classic digital Multitrack tape machines. Many have been consigned to history. Simon was a Field service engineer at Sony Broadcast when the PCM-3348 was first introduced and was a key member of the Sony team that established DASH as the only serious professional tape recording format. The majority of hit albums and singles of the eighties and nineties were recorded on a Sony DASH machine.
Even with the advent of the hard disc based recording systems with all they can offer, at a fraction of the cost. There still is a place for DASH as a back up. Most large-scale concerts and festivals will have two 48 tracks running as a back up to the main hard disc recording system. Because if you have a system crash with DASH you don't lose the lot, as you would with a most hard disc systems. (OK certain Raid arrays protect against this) but if you've ever had to re-boot a crashed HD system with a raid attached whilst Pink Floyd are playing their last ever concert (hypothetical scenario) you will quickly wish you had a DASH quietly working in the back ground.
